FAIR OF SAN BARTOLOMEO (ST BARTHOLOMEW)

FANO. AUGUST 2016. LUNGOMARE SASSONIA

Fair of San Bartolomeo

The traditional fair of San Bartolomeo is an event of both social and economic importance for the city of Fano. Every year there are about 250 stalls and food stands at the fair, and the number continues to grow. The exhibition area, where all sorts of items can be purchased, stretches between the city centre and the Lungomare Sassonia on the seafront. Purchasing hours are from 7.00 am to midnight.
The fair of San Bartolomeo is one of the oldest of its kind in the area. In a collection of old bans, housed at the city library, the Biblioteca Federiciana, there is documentary mention dating from April 8, 1457, when Fano was still ruled by the Malatesta family. On that date, the fair was scheduled for the fortnight of August 11-26 1458. Another ban, dating back to 1500, forbade the inhabitants from purchasing onions in the area of Fano, in order to prevent the resale of onions at the fair. Onions are still a traditional product that can be purchased at the fair.
